Volvo XC40 T2 review: compact SUV with 129 hp

The Volvo XC40 has been a genuine sales hit. For the second year running, it was Volvo Cars’ second best-selling model worldwide, surpassed only by the XC60. That success has now received an important boost with the addition of the 129 hp petrol T2 engine to the Volvo XC40 range.

It uses the same unit fitted to the T3 version: a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine beneath the bonnet, although it produces 129 hp rather than 163 hp. The Volvo XC40 T2 comes as standard with a manual gearbox, with an automatic available as an option, and exclusively with front-wheel drive. It claims 0–100 km/h in 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h - as is now the case across every Volvo model.

With no sporting ambitions, the Volvo XC40 T2 simply meets the needs of buyers looking for a modern, practical and well-built compact SUV. Put another way, the Volvo XC40 T2’s 129 hp will not excite, but they get the job done.

Volvo XC40 T2 pricing and fuel consumption

While it loses out on power, it gains an advantage on price. Compared with the Volvo XC40 T3, the T2 costs €2,460 less - a meaningful difference. Prices therefore start at €35,141 for the manual version. That figure can fall considerably through the promotional offer, which makes the petrol Volvo XC40 T2 available for €29,500.

Still on the subject of running costs, it is a shame that Volvo XC40 T2 fuel consumption is so dependent on the “weight” of your right foot. Average figures of around 6.9 l/100 km are achievable, but if you choose to make greater use of this engine’s abilities, expect consumption to exceed 7.5 l/100 km. It is not excessive, although some rival models perform better in this respect.

Comfort and refinement in the Volvo XC40 T2

In terms of comfort, the Volvo XC40 T2 ranks among the best in its segment. The CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform, combined with softly tuned suspension, works exceptionally well over all kinds of road surfaces. This comfort is further enhanced by the overall ergonomics and, particularly, by the seats, which provide excellent comfort and very satisfactory support.

Inside the Volvo XC40 T2

The cabin has a characteristically Scandinavian feel, with clean lines and a strong emphasis on ergonomics and material quality. Volvo has done a good job across all surfaces, using a variety of materials to avoid the monotony found in certain rivals.

The driving position is well judged, largely thanks to the extensive adjustment available for both the seats and steering wheel. The car tested was also fitted with electric seats (Power Seats), priced at €824. In short, it is difficult not to find an ideal driving position, whatever your height - something of particular importance on longer journeys.

Rear-seat space is also adequate for three children or two adults. As for luggage capacity, the Volvo XC40 provides 460 litres, an appropriate figure for the segment in which this SUV competes. The boot also includes several clever solutions for carrying bags and other items.
