Nissan is preparing to introduce a new technology that could challenge the dominance of brands such as Toyota, Hyundai and even its partner Renault in hybrid engines. It centres on a new three-cylinder unit, internally known as the ZR15DDTe.
Nissan Qashqai 2026 debuts third-generation e-Power
This engine forms the heart of the third generation of Nissan’s e-Power technology, which will make its debut in the 2026 Nissan Qashqai, scheduled to arrive in Portugal during the final quarter of the year.
Although it has only three cylinders, it has a major role to play: helping to halt the crisis facing the Japanese brand. Nissan has lost ground to rival manufacturers and needs a strong advantage to reverse that trend.
Nissan e-Power uses the engine solely as a generator
In practical terms, it is a turbocharged 1.5-litre unit designed exclusively to act as a generator in Nissan’s established e-Power hybrid system.
Early figures look encouraging
According to the manufacturer, the new engine will achieve thermal efficiency of 42%, exceeding the 41% claimed by Toyota and Hyundai for their petrol engines used in hybrid systems.
One feature contributing to this engine’s efficiency is an unprecedented manufacturing process. It will be the world’s first engine to use valve seats applied through cold spray: a copper-based metal-alloy coating sprayed at supersonic speeds directly onto the cylinder head.
Unlike conventional press-fitted valve seats, this approach makes it possible to create intake ports with less turbulence, ensuring more efficient airflow into the combustion chamber.
Exclusive patent and global ambition
Nissan has held the patent for this technology since April and stresses that the process does not involve adapting existing engine heads to this production method. A dedicated design is required to accommodate the spray-applied seats, in a process previously confined to the aerospace and defence industries.
Nissan’s investment could put the Japanese manufacturer back on equal terms with Toyota, Hyundai and Renault. We have not yet been able to drive the Qashqai fitted with this engine, but its potential has already been demonstrated by crossing the United Kingdom from end to end at an average of just 3.76 l/100 km.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen is another brand set to join the “fight” in hybrid engines soon. It will be the first time Volkswagen has offered hybrid variants-full hybrid models that do not need plugging in-across its range. Toyota has been the leading force behind this technology for the past three decades.
