New Volkswagen Touareg: prices in Portugal and 460 hp R eHybrid

Unveiled last May, the new Volkswagen Touareg has now arrived on the Portuguese market, and its pricing is already known.

The Touareg has been in its third generation since 2018, but it has now received a substantial update. This brings a fresher look, additional equipment and a plug-in hybrid powertrain that makes it the most powerful production Volkswagen currently on sale.

Two exterior looks are available. The more traditional option uses a chrome front grille, while the sportier R-Line adopts a black finish. Whichever is chosen, both aim to give the SUV a wider stance and a more assertive appearance.

While the front end remains close to the design already familiar from the model, the rear receives several new details. These include a new light signature with a horizontal LED strip and an illuminated Volkswagen badge in the middle.

What has changed inside the Volkswagen Touareg?

The Innovision Cockpit remains one of the key features of the Volkswagen Touareg cabin and has also been upgraded. It combines a digital instrument cluster with a new infotainment system featuring a higher-resolution central display. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay now operate wirelessly.

Volkswagen has also paid closer attention to the materials and finish, both of which have been improved. After all, this is the German brand's flagship model.

460 hp R eHybrid version

The updated Volkswagen Touareg is offered in Portugal with two distinct plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The first, called the Touareg eHybrid, uses a 3.0-litre V6 TSI petrol engine and delivers a combined maximum output of 380 hp and combined maximum torque of 600 Nm.

With this power sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the Touareg - fitted with air suspension as standard - reaches 100 km/h from rest in 5.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h.

The second option, the R e-Hybrid, developed by Volkswagen R, pairs the 3.0-litre V6 TSI petrol engine with a front-mounted 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor. Combined output stands at 460 hp, while combined maximum torque is 700 Nm.

As the most powerful version in the range, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, while retaining a top speed of 250 km/h.

Around 50 km in fully electric mode

Both versions share the same 17.9 kWh battery, of which 14.3 kWh is usable. It allows the new Volkswagen Touareg to cover approximately 50 kilometres in electric-only, emissions-free mode.

Interestingly, the gap between the eHybrid and the more powerful R eHybrid is only 1 kilometre: Volkswagen quotes an electric range of 50 km for the Touareg R eHybrid and 51 km for the Touareg eHybrid.

How much does the Volkswagen Touareg cost?

Now available to order on the Portuguese market, the new Volkswagen Touareg starts at €87,696 for the eHybrid version and €96,645 for the R variant.

In addition to its greater power, the R version comes as standard with black 21-inch “Leeds” alloy wheels, sportier bumpers, blue brake callipers bearing the R logo, an R interior pack and a heated leather multifunction steering wheel.

The R version of the new Touareg can also be ordered with an exclusive matt grey paint finish, available as a €2,917 option.
