Norway agrees purchase of 20 Patria 6×6 armoured vehicles with Kongsberg PROTECTOR RS4

As part of the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme, Norway has agreed to purchase 20 Patria 6×6 armoured vehicles from the Finnish company, including C2 command-and-control variants and Kongsberg PROTECTOR RS4 remote weapon stations. In February 2026, Norway joined the CAVS initiative alongside several European countries, with the aim of developing a new common armoured vehicle system for their armed forces.

The order specifically covers C2 command-and-control versions and Kongsberg PROTECTOR RS4 remote weapon stations, together with associated support, training and spare parts for the armoured vehicles. The agreement between Norway and Patria Group also includes an option to acquire a further 40 C2 variants and RS4 stations. According to the Finnish company’s announcement, deliveries are scheduled to begin this year.

Jussi Järvinen, Executive Vice President of Patria’s Protected Mobility business area, stated: “Norway’s acquisition represents an important step in strengthening shared protected mobility capabilities across the Nordic countries and the wider CAVS community. By building on common requirements, interoperable systems and shared equipment such as the Patria 6×6 platform and the RS4 weapon station configuration, participating countries can enhance operational cooperation, simplify logistics and sustain capabilities more efficiently throughout the lifecycle. For Norway and the Nordic countries, CAVS offers a practical route to deepen defence cooperation and security of supply, while delivering modern capabilities quickly”.

The CAVS programme and Nordic defence cooperation

The CAVS programme was launched in 2020 following a bilateral cooperation initiative between Finland and Latvia to jointly develop a new 6×6 armoured vehicle system meeting the member countries’ shared operational requirements. The Patria 6×6 was chosen as the programme’s land platform. The initiative currently includes Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom, which joined in February; together, these countries form a cooperation network that strengthens Europe’s and NATO’s defence industrial base and capabilities.

Patria 6×6 armoured vehicle

The Patria 6×6 armoured vehicle has a modular design, allowing a range of mission-specific configurations, including an armoured personnel carrier (APC), combat support vehicle, company command vehicle, medical evacuation vehicle, heavy APC and the 120 mm Patria NEMO mortar system. The Patria 6×6 provides STANAG Level 2 ballistic and mine protection, optional amphibious capability, and room for up to 12 crew members and personnel.

Patria 6×6 developments in 2026

During 2026, Germany received its first five pre-series CAVS Patria 6×6 vehicles. In addition, Lithuania’s State Defence Council approved the acquisition of Patria 6×6 armoured vehicles in late May, which will replace its fleet of M113 personnel carriers. Along similar lines, Finland, Norway and Latvia signed a Letter of Intent to move forward with the acquisition of Patria TRACKX armoured vehicles, a platform developed by the Finnish company to replace vehicles such as the M113 and MT-LB.
