Suzuki e SKY: compact electric kei car nears launch

Previewed as a prototype in 2025 and already spotted undergoing testing, the Suzuki e SKY is almost ready to take to the roads. The Japanese manufacturer has released the first images ahead of its Japanese launch, scheduled for this autumn.

It will become Suzuki’s third fully electric model, following the e Vitara and the commercial e Every. It will also be the brand’s first electric passenger kei car.

That status means adhering to especially strict limits on size and power. The e SKY is just 3.395 m long, 1.475 m wide and 1.625 m tall, with a 2.46 m wheelbase. Its purpose is clearly urban driving, above all else.

Close to the prototype

In its transition from concept to production form, the Suzuki e SKY has remained remarkably faithful to the styling study that previewed it, shedding only some of the more extravagant details usually associated with prototypes.

At the front, for instance, several of the more eye-catching features have disappeared, although it retains a distinctive light signature. The LED headlights are larger, the illuminated grille has been replaced by a more conventional arrangement, and the Suzuki badge remains in the same position.

The formula is equally straightforward in profile: small wheels, a tall body and a roof that appears to float above the cabin. At the rear, the light clusters are larger, while the bumper and the way the tailgate meets it have also been revised.

The interior reveals more noticeable changes. There is a digital instrument display and a 10.1-inch central screen, but Suzuki has resisted turning the entire cabin into a tablet. The climate controls have their own physical switches, while the transmission still uses a conventional selector.

A heated steering wheel and heated seats are also fitted, alongside an electric parking brake and a heat pump, which is important for limiting the effect of cabin heating on range in winter.

Small battery, substantial range

The limited technical specifications released so far are where the small Suzuki is most surprising. Its LFP battery has a capacity of only 26 kWh, yet the prototype claimed a range of up to 310 km.

That figure is impressive, but it comes with two important caveats. First, the 310 km figure still belongs to the prototype. Second, it was achieved under the Japanese WLTP cycle, which differs from the one used in Europe: Japan removes the higher-speed Extra High phase, as it is not considered representative of driving conditions in that country.

As a result, the 26 kWh and 310 km figures cannot be compared directly with the Renault Twingo’s 27.5 kWh and 263 km or the BYD Dolphin Surf’s 43.2 kWh and 322 km.

Even so, Suzuki says the e SKY’s efficiency comes from its aerodynamics, the efficiency of its electric system and, above all, its low weight: just 1030 kg.

The front electric motor produces 47 kW (64 hp) and 133 Nm, reaching the power ceiling traditionally adopted by Japanese manufacturers for kei cars. It remains to be confirmed whether the European version will retain the same outputs.

When will it arrive and how much will it cost?

The e SKY will be officially unveiled in Japan in autumn 2026, with Europe expected to follow in 2027. According to Nikkei Asia, the United Kingdom and Italy are among the markets being considered for the small electric car, although Suzuki has not yet officially confirmed which European countries will sell it.

Official pricing has not yet been announced either. The same information suggests a price below £20,000 in the United Kingdom, equivalent at current exchange rates to less than €23,000. This does not make it possible to predict how much it could cost in Portugal.
