Google Maps: Gemini, Immersive Navigation and Ask Maps transform driving

Google Maps, the mapping app that has become the default choice in the car for many people, is currently being reinvented. Google Maps is receiving its biggest overhaul in years: an entirely new 3D navigation experience and a Gemini-based conversational assistant designed to do far more in everyday use than simply plan routes.

How Google Maps is changing at its core

On 12 March 2026, Google announced two major additions: “Immersive Navigation” and “Ask Maps”. Both features are built on Gemini models and address an issue familiar to every driver: too much information, too little clarity, and a map that often feels like a flat diagram rather than the real-world surroundings.

Google Maps is evolving from a flat map into a spatial driving environment with clearer route guidance and direct communication.

The new 3D view is intended to make driving less stressful by removing the need for motorists to mentally interpret what a map is trying to show. At the same time, the chat assistant should make searching for places more natural: users will no longer need to know precise search terms and can phrase requests freely, much as they would in a conversation with another person.

Immersive Navigation: turning the road into a 3D environment

With Immersive Navigation, Google Maps is gradually moving away from the traditional, highly simplified top-down view. Rather than displaying stylised blocks, the app presents a realistic spatial reconstruction of the surrounding area. It uses Street View imagery and aerial photographs, which Gemini analyses and combines into a detailed 3D model.

Buildings, bridges and traffic lights visible at a glance

The new display introduces considerably more detail, much of which was previously only implied or absent altogether. According to Google, this includes:

  • clearly separated lanes with road markings
  • visible traffic lights and stop signs
  • pedestrian crossings and zebra crossings
  • buildings, bridges and changes in road elevation

This could be especially helpful at confusing junctions, exits and multi-lane intersections. Instead of viewing only a line on a flat map, drivers can understand the layout in three dimensions: where the turning lane runs, where the road narrows and where an exit ramp actually leads.

Transparent buildings and intelligent zooming at difficult points

A key part of the redesign is how Google Maps handles perspective. The app automatically zooms in at critical moments and makes buildings partly transparent, keeping the road layout and lanes in view. This should make it easier to judge which exit or lane is actually being indicated.

Anyone driving through densely built-up junctions in major cities will know the issue: the map says “turn right”, yet several turn-offs lie ahead. The new view is intended to prevent the kind of last-second manoeuvres that such situations often cause.

A new voice style for navigation

Google is updating the spoken guidance as well as the visuals. The familiar robotic voice with its fixed phrasing is being replaced by a more flexible style. Rather than saying “turn right in 300 metres”, instructions may in future reflect the situation, for example: “Pass this exit and take the next right.”

These directions are more closely based on what drivers can genuinely see: a visible exit, a distinctive turn-off or a notable building. The voice is meant to sound less like it is reading out a list of numbers and more like practical guidance.

According to Google, it processes several million traffic data points per second – covering everything from congestion and accidents to flooding.

This is supplemented by millions of daily reports from the community, including information on roadworks, closures and traffic obstructions. All of this data feeds into route calculations and also underpins the 3D navigation experience.

Clearer guidance on alternative routes

Google Maps is also changing the way it presents alternative routes. The app previously displayed several options, but the differences between them were not always immediately clear. With the update, Maps more explicitly sets out the trade-offs associated with each route.

Typical scenarios include:

  • a faster but chargeable route involving a toll or city-centre charge
  • a free route that takes longer but offers less congestion
  • a particularly fuel-efficient option with a lower average speed

This should allow users to make more informed choices about whether time savings, cost or stress levels matter most. For commuters travelling regular routes, this may be useful from one day to the next when traffic conditions or roadworks change quickly.

Ask Maps: a chat assistant for complex location queries

The second major addition is found not in navigation but in search. Ask Maps is a conversational assistant integrated directly into Google Maps. It is powered by the Gemini model, which can process free-text requests.

Writing ordinary sentences instead of search terms

Until now, Google Maps users often had to think in “search engine logic”: “Italian restaurant central Berlin”, “24-hour petrol station Munich” or “supermarket open Sunday”. With Ask Maps, natural requests are enough, such as:

  • “Show me cosy cafés where I can still work after 22:00.”
  • “Where can I find family-friendly hotels with a pool near a ski resort?”
  • “Which neighbourhoods are lively in the evening without being too noisy?”

The assistant is designed to understand these requests, compare them with location data, ratings and opening hours, and then highlight suitable suggestions on the map.

Contextual responses rather than simple lists

What is particularly notable is that Ask Maps is not intended simply to produce a list of results. Its answers can include context, such as why a place is being recommended, its typical advantages and disadvantages, or how different destinations could be combined during one journey.

What this means for drivers and travellers

The combination of the 3D view and conversational assistant is clearly aimed at reducing stress. Anyone dealing with numerous distractions – dense city traffic, unfamiliar surroundings or children in the back seat – could benefit from a map that works more like an “explained environment”.

At the same time, reliance on the app will increase. The more decisions Maps prepares in advance, the easier it becomes to neglect one’s own observation of the road and surroundings. Users should remember that the 3D view is an aid, not a replacement for attention.

It will also be interesting to see how Ask Maps affects traditional review platforms. If the assistant compresses ratings, photographs and user experiences into concise recommendations, many people may place greater trust in the summary than in lengthy comments. That can speed up searching, but it can also remove nuance.

Anyone planning to use the new Google Maps should first become familiar with a few terms: “Gemini” refers to Google’s AI models, which analyse both image data and text inputs here. “Immersive Navigation” describes the 3D driving view, while “Ask Maps” is the app’s chat layer. The two modules work together when users ask questions about places along a route while planning a journey.

This could be especially interesting on holiday: a family plans a drive, asks for a playground with a café halfway along the route, chooses a toll-free but relaxed option, and navigates using a view that renders the area in three dimensions. These are the scenarios Google is targeting with the update – initially in the US, followed gradually by other regions.
