New Peugeot 208: a radical electric future with Hypersquare steering wheel

The next-generation Peugeot 208 is expected to be unveiled next year, with the French marque preparing what could be the boldest and most crucial transformation in the history of its best-selling model.

Peugeot 208 and the STLA Small platform

The change begins with the debut of the STLA Small platform, which will underpin Stellantis compact cars spanning the A to C segments.

STLA Small introduces new technological features, including a first-ever steer-by-wire steering system. As on the Tesla Cybertruck, there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. Peugeot says steer-by-wire technology offers several advantages, including more accurate steering and improved safety.

This will be an absolute first for both Peugeot and the wider Stellantis group, and it could soon be adopted by further models, including the future Opel Corsa, which has already been previewed by a radical concept car.

The steer-by-wire system, which cuts steering-wheel movement to fewer than one full turn, will also enable the new Peugeot 208 to introduce a fresh steering-wheel design previewed by the 2023 Inception concept: the Hypersquare.

As shown in the image above, the Hypersquare does not use a yoke layout, as seen in Tesla and Lexus models. Instead, it has a rectangular shape with rounded corners. Four circular openings beside the rim provide places to grip it. Just as the i-Cockpit did when it was introduced in the 208 in 2012, this solution is likely to generate plenty of discussion.

The i-Cockpit itself will also develop further. It is expected to feature a large curved panoramic screen within a more digital, minimalist cabin, although it is not expected to adopt the same arrangement used in the Inception.

Greater use of digital solutions should bring advantages in other areas too, including better use of available space and increased interior flexibility.

Electric only?

Although the STLA Small platform was designed primarily for fully electric vehicles, it still allows for internal-combustion engines. Nevertheless, all signs point to the next-generation Peugeot 208 being electric only.

That does not mean combustion-powered 208s will disappear from sale. The current generation, in its combustion versions with 48 V mild-hybrid powertrains, is expected to remain on the market for several more years alongside the new model.

A new era for Peugeot and Stellantis

The next Peugeot 208 therefore promises to take on extra importance, introducing a new platform and technologies not previously seen within Stellantis, while also paving the way for a new generation of compact electric cars.

Before the new 208 is revealed, Peugeot will unveil a prototype called “Polygon”, which will preview the future model’s design and interior. It is expected to be presented before the end of 2025, confirming an aesthetic transition featuring elements inherited from the Inception.

The next-generation Peugeot 208 itself is only expected to be officially unveiled in 2026, beginning a cycle that will mark the French brand’s definitive shift towards electric mobility.
