What has so far resembled a fairly conventional navigation app is now evolving into a kind of digital co-pilot. Google Maps is receiving its biggest redesign in years: new 3D navigation, transparent buildings, significantly smarter voice guidance and a Gemini-based AI assistant are intended to make driving more relaxed and searching for places far more natural.
New 3D view: the road takes centre stage
At the heart of the update is an entirely new way of displaying routes. Rather than the familiar, relatively flat map view, Google is introducing a three-dimensional reconstruction of the surroundings. It is based on Street View data and aerial imagery analysed with the help of Gemini models.
This 3D view includes considerably more detail that was previously only hinted at, or missing altogether:

Alternative routes have been available for some time, but their presentation has often seemed confusing. Maps will now show more clearly how multiple suggested routes differ from one another.
