Useful tips for cutting the cost of filling up.
Although pump prices dipped slightly at the end of the year, they quickly climbed back to a very high level following the war in Iran. The geopolitical outlook offers little reason for optimism in the months ahead. Many drivers have no option but to refuel frequently, yet methods already used in Germany could make a real difference.
As Auto Plus reports, the ADAC motoring association has shared advice and recommendations with its members to help them spend a little less at petrol stations.
Avoid motorway petrol stations
One of the first habits to adopt is avoiding filling up on motorways, where fuel prices are often higher. The organisation has identified mark-ups of up to 50 cents per litre of petrol or diesel in certain places, particularly in urban areas.
Fill up in the evening or early morning
The ADAC also recommends completely filling the tank whenever you refuel. The reason is that fuel tends to evaporate more slowly when the tank is full, meaning you stand to benefit.
It is also preferable to refuel between 18:00 and 22:00, or very early in the morning. Temperatures are cooler at those times, and avoiding the hottest periods affects fuel density, allowing you to receive more fuel for the same price. The savings may be greater than expected: the association estimates a gain of 10 cents per litre of fuel.
ADAC advice requires more planning
That said, this German approach does place certain demands on drivers. It requires better journey planning and more anticipation of when to visit the pumps. Nevertheless, it is especially worthwhile for high-mileage motorists, as saving a few cents on every litre can add up to significant amounts for anyone travelling long distances.
