Toyota Aygo X 2026 becomes the market’s lowest-emission non-plug-in hybrid

Toyota has updated the Aygo X, and the changes go far beyond styling: the Japanese brand’s city car will become hybrid-only, making it the non-plug-in hybrid with the lowest CO₂ emissions on the market: 86 g/km.

The 2026 Aygo X therefore drops its petrol-only engine - the naturally aspirated 1.0-litre unit producing 72 hp - and adopts the Yaris hybrid powertrain. Pairing a 1.5-litre engine with an electric motor, it raises output by 44 hp to 116 hp. The 0-100 km/h time is expected to fall below 10 seconds, five seconds quicker than the current model.

A more sophisticated look

Alongside its new hybrid powertrain, which is considerably more powerful and efficient, the new Toyota Aygo X adopts a sportier appearance. It gains a new bonnet, new light units and a redesigned front grille. Wheel sizes of 17 or 18 inches will be available.

Inside, Toyota has upgraded the materials and assembly quality, while also paying greater attention to sound insulation. It remains a four-seater, and boot capacity is unchanged at 231 litres.

As part of this update, the instrument cluster becomes fully digital and the Aygo X gains enhanced connectivity. It now also features a wireless smartphone charger, a digital key and an electric parking brake, the latter fitted as standard across the range.

A sportier Toyota Aygo X option

Another new feature for the 2026 Toyota Aygo X is the introduction of a GR Sport version with a more athletic look, as seen on the example Diogo was able to inspect for a few minutes.

It receives an exclusive mustard yellow body colour, paired with a black bonnet and roof. A retractable fabric roof can be specified as an option.

The cabin features GR badging along with dedicated gloss-black and grey trim details. There is more to this version, however: the Toyota Aygo X GR Sport uses specific springs and dampers, as well as revised power-steering calibration, to make the driving experience more engaging.

When will it arrive?

The new Toyota Aygo X - including the GR Sport version - is expected to reach the domestic market only at the beginning of 2026. Final prices are therefore not yet available.

Given its more sophisticated powertrain and 50% larger engine capacity, it is expected to arrive with a higher price than the current car. The Aygo X currently starts at €18,240, while the most affordable hybrid Yaris begins at €26,300. The hybrid Aygo X should be priced somewhere between the two.
