Kia Niro 2026: what changes in the updated SUV

Launched in 2016, the Kia Niro has become one of the South Korean brand’s key pillars and a genuine success story, with more than one million units sold worldwide.

Now in its second generation, the Niro is preparing for the customary mid-cycle update, intended to strengthen its appeal. Although no European launch date has yet been announced, it has already been revealed in its home market of South Korea, so its arrival should not be far off.

What has changed?

On the outside, the 2026 Niro adopts styling that brings it into line with the brand’s other models, all shaped by Kia’s “Opposites United” design language. Its front end now looks much closer to that of the recently updated Stonic and the new EV2, the brand’s most affordable electric car.

This means the headlights are now vertically arranged and positioned nearer the outer edges of the bodywork. They sit alongside a redesigned bumper and newly styled alloy wheels.

At the rear, the most noticeable changes are the darkened light units and the number plate’s relocation from the tailgate to the bumper.

Kia Niro 2026 interior updates

The most substantial revisions have been made inside. There is a new steering wheel, along with two new 12.3-inch displays for the instruments and infotainment system, featuring more contemporary graphics.

Thankfully, and because doing so could compromise safety, Kia has not followed the trend of removing physical controls. Instead, Jochen Paesen, the brand’s head of interior design, told Autocar that Kia does not intend to dispense with buttons.

The multi-mode touch panel therefore remains, allowing drivers to switch between climate-control functions and infotainment shortcuts.

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric options

It is not yet known whether the 2026 Kia Niro will bring any changes beneath the bonnet. One thing is certain, however: the South Korean SUV is expected to arrive in Europe with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

In Portugal, only the hybrid version is currently on sale, with prices starting from €34,205.

When will it arrive?

According to Kia, further information on the 2026 Kia Niro will be shared next March, when it launches in its home market. It is scheduled to reach other markets in the following months.
