Isuzu D-Max 2026 gets a new Diesel engine from €33,188

Electrification has now reached the Isuzu D-Max, with a fully electric version joining the range. That does not mean, however, that the Japanese pickup is ready to abandon Diesel power.

The key change in this update sits beneath the bonnet: a new Diesel engine. It is accompanied by refreshed exterior styling and, according to the manufacturer, a “more comfortable and sophisticated” cabin.

As before, the 2026 Isuzu D-Max is offered with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, three cab styles - single, extended and double cab - plus specifications aimed at both work and leisure use. Prices start at €33,188 (+VAT).

The new Isuzu D-Max Diesel engine

At a time when Diesel remains under scrutiny, Isuzu has made this type of engine the headline development for the 2026 D-Max.

The previous 1.9-litre unit has been replaced by a new 2.2-litre engine. Output remains at 164 hp, although peak torque rises from 360 Nm to 400 Nm, delivered between 1600 rpm and 2400 rpm.

According to the brand, the greatest improvement is noticeable at low engine speeds. At just 1000 rpm, the new engine produces 255 Nm of torque, compared with only 160 Nm from the previous 1.9-litre engine.

Isuzu states that the increased availability of torque reduces the need to use the gearbox in situations such as manoeuvring, climbing, pulling away under load or driving over uneven surfaces.

The transmissions have also been updated to cope with the additional torque. The aim, says Isuzu, was to enhance performance, efficiency, durability and day-to-day comfort.

The range includes a six-speed manual gearbox and a new eight-speed Aisin automatic transmission, calibrated specifically for the new engine. Availability depends on the version selected.

Off-road ability, still one of this pickup’s strongest selling points, is also retained. Depending on the specification, it can ford water up to 80 cm deep and offers approach, breakover and departure angles of up to 30.5°, 22.9° and 24.2° respectively.

Refreshed styling

As is typical of a mid-cycle update, the exterior changes are largely detailed revisions. At the front, there is a new grille, redesigned light clusters, larger fog lamps and fresh alloy-wheel designs.

At the rear, the lights have also been restyled, while a new bumper and a new load-bed tailgate handle have been added.

Inside, there are new trim patterns, a multifunction steering wheel and a 7-inch digital instrument panel. Depending on the version, four exterior cameras are also available, providing a 360° view around the pickup.

The update also introduces features including driver monitoring and 4G e-Call, while bringing the D-Max into line with Euro 6e-bis standards and the latest European safety requirements.

In Portugal, 2026 Isuzu D-Max prices begin at €33,188 (+VAT) for the two-seat single cab. The three-seat extended cab starts from €36,908 (+VAT), while the double cab, available with three or five seats, is priced from €38,508 (+VAT).

For the single cab, the L version is offered with 4×2 or 4×4 drive and a manual gearbox, while the automatic is available to order. The extended-cab range is limited to 4×4 L and LS versions, with a manual or automatic gearbox; on L models, the automatic is available to order. The double cab can be specified with 4×2 or 4×4 drive, three or five seats, and L, LS or LSE trim levels, paired with a manual or automatic transmission depending on the version.
