Far-a-day wants to charge electric cars without stopping

Charging an electric car without stopping or even leaving the vehicle still sounds far-fetched and unlikely. However, Far-a-day wants to turn the concept into reality with a trailer that acts as a kind of power bank for electric vehicles.

In principle, the system is straightforward. On arriving at one of the company’s stations, the driver simply parks in one of the marked bays. The module then moves independently, lines itself up with the car and connects automatically, allowing the journey to continue.

According to the French start-up, the process takes around two minutes. This external battery can add roughly 300 km of range while the vehicle remains on the road.

For everyday driving, electric cars can be both efficient and economical. On longer journeys, however, compulsory charging stops still set a different pace.

This solution aims to reverse that approach. Rather than the car and its driver having to find an available charger, the charger follows the car.

At the end of the trip, the electric charger is left at another station, where it replenishes its energy before being made available to the next user. Along the way, it uses clean energy and claims to cost less than conventional rapid charging.

The drawback is that none of this is operating yet. For now, the company is collecting votes to determine where it could open its first stations.
