BYD’s move into plug-in hybrids is not new, and the brand is strengthening its Portuguese line-up with a new Seal U DM-i version that delivers 125 km of electric-only range on the combined WLTP cycle. Total range, combining electric and petrol power, stands at 1,125 km.
Named Comfort, the new Chinese SUV variant sits between the Boost and Design versions, with prices starting at €44,490. Despite occupying the middle position in the range, the Comfort delivers the longest electric range: its 125 km exceeds the Boost’s 80 km and the Design’s 70 km.
BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort battery and powertrain
To achieve this, BYD has fitted the Seal U DM-i Comfort with a larger 26.6 kWh battery. The remaining versions use an 18.3 kWh battery.
Otherwise, the Comfort is mechanically the same as the Boost. Its maximum combined output is 160 kW (218 hp), while torque is 300 Nm. These figures come from a 1.5-litre petrol engine working with an electric motor, also mounted at the front, with front-wheel drive.
Charging is available, as with the other variants, at up to 11 kW on alternating current (AC) or up to 18 kW on direct current (DC). Using DC charging, the battery takes 55 minutes to replenish from 30% to 80%.
Prices across the BYD Seal U range
The BYD Seal U line-up includes both electric and plug-in hybrid models. The electric Seal U versions arrived first, with the plug-in hybrids following shortly afterwards. Adding plug-in hybrid variants enabled BYD both to broaden the range and to avoid the European tariffs applied to electric cars imported from China.
With the arrival of this Comfort version, which raises electric range to 125 km, the Chinese SUV range in Portugal is now made up as follows:
