Electric vehicle sales reach a new global monthly record

Demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, although it still falls short of the expectations held by some manufacturers. In September alone, 2.1 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide, setting a new monthly record.

“Global electric vehicle sales exceeded two million units in a single month for the first time,” said Charles Lester, data manager at Rho Motion.

China sits at the top of the table, having sold 1.3 million electric vehicles last month. This figure not only marks a national record, but also represents growth of 28% compared with the same month in 2024.

Electric vehicle sales surge in the US and Europe

However, the sharpest growth in electric vehicle sales was recorded in the US (66%). It was driven by the end of federal incentives for buying electric vehicles, which expired on 30 September.

This was the second consecutive month in which the United States posted growth in electric vehicle sales. Nevertheless, the consultancy expects a steep decline in the final quarter of this year, as consumers and businesses lose access to these incentives.

Europe also posted record figures, with 427 thousand electric vehicles sold in September, up 36% on the equivalent period. In the United Kingdom, sales reached a new record thanks to the Electric Car Grant. In Germany, Europe’s leading market, another increase in electric vehicle sales is expected, particularly following the announcement of the new incentives package.

Nearly 15 million electric vehicles in 2025

Between January and September, almost 15 million electric vehicle units were sold, an increase of 26% compared with the same period last year.

In cumulative figures, China is once again in the lead, with nine million units sold (+24%). Europe ranks second with three million (+32%), followed by the US in third place with 1.5 million (+11%). The rest of the world accounted for 1.2 million units, representing growth of 48%.
