Citroën has earmarked 2023 for the introduction of the new generations of the C3 and C3 Aircross, two models that are crucial to the French marque in the European market.
New Citroën C3 Aircross arrives first
The process is expected to begin with the unveiling of the new Citroën C3 Aircross. It has already been spotted during the usual winter testing, and is due to make its world debut in the second half of the year.
First introduced in 2017, and with more than 330,000 units sold since then, the C3 Aircross is set to grow by around 150 mm. It will also take on an increasingly adventurous look, closer to that of a so-called “traditional” SUV.
As well as featuring the French brand’s latest interpretation of the Double Chevron, first shown on the Citroën Oli, the new Citroën C3 Aircross is also expected to adopt several styling cues inspired by that electric concept.
Citroën C3 Aircross powertrains and platform
Based on the CMP/eCMP platform, also used by models such as the Peugeot 2008 and Opel Mokka, the Citroën C3 Aircross will finally be electrified.
We can therefore expect petrol-powered variants, mild-hybrid versions and, very likely, a fully electric model. The Diesel engine offered in the current generation is not expected to “survive”.
New Citroën C3 is also on the way
Later this year, the Citroën C3 will also gain its fourth generation, following much of what will be seen in the C3 Aircross several months earlier.
A styling revolution is anticipated, again shaped largely by some of the features Citroën revealed on the Oli. As a result, the youthful and fun image that has always defined the Citroën C3 will remain.
New Citroën C3 engines and launch timing
Using the same CMP/eCMP platform as its Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa “cousins”, the new Citroën C3 should receive a powertrain range very similar to that of the C3 Aircross. It will retain petrol engines - with the 83 hp 1.2 PureTech unit expected to continue - while also gaining a fully electric version called the ë-C3.
Citroën has not yet confirmed when it will reveal the new C3 generation to the world, but the latest rumours suggest that its presentation will take place towards the end of the year, followed by a market launch during the first quarter of 2024.
