Volkswagen T-Roc Full Hybrid confirmed for 2025

The new-generation Volkswagen T-Roc is due to be unveiled shortly, bringing an absolute first for the German brand: a hybrid system that does not need plugging in (Full Hybrid), similar to those already offered by Toyota and Renault.

Volkswagen T-Roc Full Hybrid joins the range

Until now, Volkswagen’s hybrid powertrains have either been the milder mild-hybrid type or plug-in hybrids, which can be charged externally. What has been missing is a conventional hybrid, also known as an HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) or Full Hybrid.

Why introduce this solution now? Thomas Schäfer, the brand’s chief executive, explains: “we are going to test this solution now, as some regions are showing a greater appetite for hybrids (HEVs)”.

Schäfer noted that this hybrid system will be essential in regions such as South America, where demand for this type of technology is increasing. It is also gaining ground in markets including the US.

Hybrid system rollout across Volkswagen models

However, Schäfer says it should not be expected on every model based on the MQB platform, such as the T-Roc. Volkswagen intends to assess how this solution is received - or sought after - across different markets and respond accordingly.

That said, the hybrid system is already confirmed for the Golf and Tiguan ranges within the next two years.

When will it arrive?

The rumours pointing to a new hybrid Volkswagen T-Roc are therefore confirmed - although it will not be a plug-in hybrid. Unfortunately, no specifications have yet been disclosed for this powertrain, which is new both to the range and to the German manufacturer.

As previously mentioned, the official unveiling is scheduled for early summer, with its public debut taking place in September at another edition of IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, Germany. It is expected to reach the market shortly afterwards.
