Porsche has unveiled the 911 GT3 R rennsport, a 620 hp “monster” created for sports car enthusiasts and collectors.
Limited to just 77 examples, the Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport made its debut at Rennsport Reunion 7, an event currently taking place at California’s legendary Laguna Seca circuit in the United States.
However, the 911 GT3 R rennsport is not homologated to race in official FIA GT3 championships. Nor is it permitted on public roads. That is because this 911 is a genuine “monster”, released from the constraints of regulations. It is the ultimate dream toy - or, if you prefer, one of the most spectacular track-day cars Porsche has ever built.
Derived from the competition-specification 911 GT3 R, the rennsport stands out through its distinctive styling and an even more aggressive aerodynamic package.
Wild and beyond the regulations
According to the Stuttgart manufacturer, only the production GT3 R’s bonnet and roof have been retained. Every other body component has been altered. This is especially evident at the front, which receives extra air intakes and an even more pronounced air diffuser.
From the side, as you will undoubtedly have noticed, there are no conventional door mirrors. In their place sit three cameras that relay images to the displays inside. It is all intended to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of this 911 GT3 R rennsport, which features the “mother” of all rear wings, inspired by the iconic 935/77.
And, speaking of the rear wing, the downforce figures it produces are so high that Porsche had to reinforce it with two additional vertical supports. There is more: to save weight, the Stuttgart brand chose not to fit grilles to the lower section of the rear bumper, leaving the exhaust system’s two central outlets exposed.
The exterior design is completed by 18-inch BBS wheels, finished as standard in “Dark Silver Metallic” and meeting every technical requirement for a centre-lock racing wheel.
Unrestricted racing engine
The 911 GT3 R rennsport is free from every FIA GT3 regulation constraint, and that is equally apparent in its even more extreme mechanical package.
Its 4.2-litre six-cylinder boxer engine is the same unit used in the racing 911 GT3 R, but it is significantly more powerful in rennsport form: output rises from 565 hp to 620 hp, sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox.
That equates to an output of up to 148 hp per litre of displacement, an impressive figure for a naturally aspirated racing engine capable of “screaming” all the way to 9,400 rpm.
While it “accepts” conventional fuels, this engine has been developed to run on E25 - a blend of 25% ethanol and 75% petrol - and uses pistons and camshafts designed specifically for the occasion.
A price to match
The 911 GT3 R rennsport is as spectacular as it is exclusive and, as you may already have guessed, it does not come cheaply.
To secure one of the 77 examples of this “collector’s piece”, as Porsche describes it, buyers will need to pay 951 000 euros before tax, taking the final price beyond the one-million-euro mark.
It is certainly a small fortune, but that is the price of owning one of the most special Porsche 911 models of recent years.
