The new-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, the flagship of the American brand’s European line-up, was expected last year but is only now arriving in Portugal.
Built on a new platform - an evolution of the Giorgio architecture used by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio - the new Grand Cherokee will be sold exclusively with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, known in Jeep terminology as 4xe.
For the Grand Cherokee 4xe, Jeep has selected a hybrid system comprising one petrol engine and two electric motors. It is identical in every respect to the system already familiar from the Wrangler 4xe, a model we have already tested.
The combustion engine is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit. Its two electric motors draw power from a 400 V battery made up of 96 cells.
Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe driving modes and range
In fully electric mode, it offers a range of between 48 km and 51 km. Using the full capabilities of the system, however, total range can reach 700 km. Three driving modes are available for this purpose: Hybrid, Electric and eSave.
The most exclusive specification in the Grand Cherokee range
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is offered in four trims: Limited, Overland, Trailhawk and Summit Reserve.
In Portugal, however, only the range-topping Summit Reserve version will be available to order. It brings a more refined cabin and a more extensive equipment list, although it also comes with a higher price.
On this flagship Jeep Grand Cherokee version, the polished alloy wheels measure 21 inches in diameter. More than 110 driver-assistance and safety functions are included, alongside features such as night-vision cameras and systems that provide a 360º view around the vehicle.
More demanding audio enthusiasts have not been overlooked either. The Grand Cherokee’s sound system in this version was developed with the assistance of McIntosh Sound. It features a 950 W amplifier and 19 speakers, as well as a dedicated control display on the central cabin screen.
It is an ideal arrangement for those moments when occupants can enjoy the leather upholstery and wood trim. The latter is not imitation wood, but genuine walnut.
How much does it cost?
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Summit Reserve is already available to order in Portugal, with all the equipment mentioned above fitted as standard. Prices start from €103,500.
