Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI: the electric hot hatch arrives in 2027

Heralded by the ID. GTI Concept, the new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI will become the German manufacturer's first fully electric model to wear this hugely iconic badge.

Although it is not due to reach the market until 2027, Volkswagen has confirmed that its first public appearance will take place at the Munich Motor Show, from 9 to 14 September. It will, however, still be completely camouflaged.

That is no reason to temper expectations. According to Volkswagen chief executive Thomas Schäfer, this electric hot hatch promises to “recapture the idea of sporty driving with the character needed for everyday use”.

Compared with the standard ID. Polo, the GTI adopts a more assertive look, with wider wheel arches, a small rear diffuser, a rear spoiler and larger 19-inch alloy wheels featuring an exclusive design.

Interior space is also one of the ID. Polo's strongest selling points, regardless of the version chosen. Despite its sharper dynamic credentials, the GTI will be no different in this respect.

Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI rivals clearly defined

The new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI will face clearly identified rivals. Powered by Volkswagen's new APP550 electric motor, the German hot hatch will deliver 166 kW (226 hp). That puts it “side by side” with the Alpine A290 (220 hp in its most powerful version), although it remains behind the newly unveiled Peugeot e-208 GTI (281 hp).

Underneath, it will use the new MEB Entry platform. Unlike the MEB architecture underpinning models such as the ID.3 and ID.4, it positions an electric motor on the front axle and replaces independent rear suspension with a semi-rigid setup.

Unlike the standard ID. Polo, however, the GTI is expected to use only the higher-capacity battery. While this has yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be a 56 kWh unit, which gives the ID. Polo a claimed maximum range of up to 450 km (WLTP). The figure for this version is likely to be slightly lower.

The German brand has already stated that the model will support DC charging at up to 125 kW.

More extreme versions on the way

The GTI variant is only the beginning. If 226 hp is not enough, further, more “spiced-up” versions are on their way.

Volkswagen has already confirmed a Clubsport version which, like its Golf counterpart, is expected to receive mechanical changes intended to heighten the driving experience, with outputs potentially rising to 210 kW (286 hp).

There are also rumours of an even more radical version: the all-wheel-drive ID. Polo R. This has not yet been confirmed, however.

When will it arrive and how much will it cost?

The new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI will be unveiled at the end of next year, before going on sale in 2027. Pricing, meanwhile, remains unknown.

While the ID. Polo is expected to start at €25,000, the GTI variant is estimated to be priced close to its rivals. For comparison, the Alpine A290 has been available in Portugal from €38,700.
