Toyota Corolla Concept previews the next generation

Toyota Corolla is unquestionably one of the most familiar names in the global car industry, and with good reason: it has topped the list of the world’s best-selling cars on several occasions. At the Tokyo Motor Show, the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the marque has now unveiled a concept car previewing the model’s next generation.

Named the Corolla Concept, this prototype introduces an entirely fresh look and signals the start of a new chapter for Toyota’s most popular model. Its styling is more futuristic and dynamic, with stretched proportions.

In design terms, the Corolla Concept features sculpted surfaces and a flowing silhouette that brings it closer to a fastback. It has something of a Prius-like character, for instance, although with more generous dimensions.

At the front, the lighting arrangement consists of a horizontal strip, as shown in the gallery above, ending in the angular shapes seen on Toyota’s latest models. With no grille in sight, it appears that combustion engines may not have been considered. But is that really the case? We will come to that shortly.

At the rear, the prototype has a light signature extending across the full width of the bodywork, this time in a more “pixelated” treatment. The model name is positioned centrally on the boot lid. It is an approach far removed from the more conservative image of earlier generations.

A minimalist Toyota Corolla interior

Minimalism defines the cabin. The interior includes a raised centre console, very few physical controls and a fully digital instrument display. Every element has been designed to convey lightness and modernity without sacrificing space or practicality, two of the principal reasons behind the Toyota Corolla’s worldwide success.

Ready for every powertrain

Despite what its design might suggest, Toyota has confirmed that the Corolla Concept was developed to accommodate several types of powertrain, ranging from combustion-engine versions to hybrid and fully electric solutions. This flexibility will be one of the foundations of the next generation, enabling the model to suit different markets and varying levels of electrification.

Although no technical details have yet been confirmed, the Corolla Concept points to a flexible architecture and a clearer focus on electrification, while retaining the reliability that has always defined the Corolla.

When will it arrive?

Everything suggests that the production model based on the Corolla Concept could reach the market in 2026 or 2027, although nothing has yet been confirmed.
