Fuel prices are rising and are expected to remain high over the coming weeks - diesel is set to see the biggest increase.
New Diesel models available in Portugal
It remains Portugal’s most widely used fuel, yet the selection of new Diesel-engined models continues to shrink year after year - a trend that has persisted since the Dieselgate scandal in 2015.
Today, it is no longer possible to buy new city cars or superminis with this type of engine. The range begins only with compact family cars.
The table below brings together the new Diesel models on sale in the Portuguese market with the lowest official combined-cycle WLTP fuel consumption. Take a look:
The new Diesel cars with the lowest fuel consumption
As you may have noticed, the supply of new models with Diesel engines is now almost entirely dominated by German manufacturers. Moreover, the least expensive or least powerful model is not always the one that uses the least fuel.
There are also no Diesel SUVs among the models that consume the least diesel: the choices are limited to four- and five-door saloons or estates. Their lower aerodynamic drag and lighter weight compared with equivalent SUVs explain their lower consumption figures.
If a Diesel-engined car best suits your needs but the prices of new vehicles are beyond your budget, the used-car market is the alternative. Discover the available selection:
Returning to new Diesel-engined models, BMW, the Volkswagen Group and Mercedes-Benz dominate this table, although Stellantis is also represented… through a German brand, Opel. As well as the Astra, the Peugeot 308 is available with the same engine and very similar consumption figures.
Stellantis recently announced that it will strengthen its commitment to Diesel, extending availability to more models across its brands because demand remains in the market. Find out more details:
