Audi A2 e-tron revealed as Audi’s most affordable electric car

Speculation is over. During its Annual Press Conference, Audi unveiled the first preview image of the A2 e-tron, which is set to arrive in autumn. It will become the brand’s most affordable electric car.

Audi A2 e-tron design takes inspiration from the original

The teaser does little more than confirm what earlier spy photographs had already shown: its outline nods to the MPV concept and the original 1999 A2. It also brings back the “Kamm tail” - a roofline that slopes down before ending abruptly in a vertical cut, helping to lower aerodynamic drag.

“We listened to our customers. They want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life. The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly that: efficiency, compact dimensions and confidence. We are making entry into Audi’s electric world easier and more relevant than ever before,” added Gernot Döllner, the brand’s chief executive.

What we know so far

Although Audi is promising compact dimensions, the new Audi A2 e-tron will be considerably larger than the 1999 A2. It is expected to use the 400 V MEB platform, which also underpins the Volkswagen ID.3 and Audi Q4 e-tron, with its dimensions likely to place it somewhere between those two models.

Powertrains and interior layout

It will also use the same motors and batteries. However, as the ID.3 and Q4 e-tron are both due to be updated this year, no details have yet been disclosed on whether those revisions will bring new motors or battery packs.

New A2 e-tron spy shots recently provided an initial look at the cabin. Its design appears set to closely follow the approach Audi has adopted for its latest models, centred on a curved dual-screen display serving as both the instrument panel and infotainment system.

When will it arrive?

The new Audi A2 e-tron will be built at Audi’s Ingolstadt plant in Germany, where the company is headquartered. Its global debut is scheduled for autumn 2026.

It will be tasked with indirectly replacing the current A1 and Q2, whose production ends this year and which will not receive direct combustion-engined successors. That comes at a cost.

While it will become Audi’s most affordable electric model, moving the brand’s entry-level offering to an EV will not make it cheap. Its price is expected to sit closer to that of the Q4 e-tron, currently available from €49,700, than to the entry-level models it is replacing.
