Xiaomi SU7 Ultra receives first registration in Germany

What looked like little more than a Nürburgring PR stunt only recently is now becoming tangible: the ultra-powerful Xiaomi SU7 Ultra electric saloon has received its first standard registration in Germany. This clears the way for the car to appear not only on the ‘Ring’, but soon on ordinary roads across Europe too – with performance figures capable of making many supercars look dated.

From Nürburgring record chaser to a road-registered everyday car

In this country, Chinese technology group Xiaomi has so far been best known for smartphones, robot vacuum cleaners and smart-home gadgets. Three years ago, the company chose to enter the automotive industry with a radical proposition: an all-electric saloon called the SU7.

Its most extreme specification is the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. The model has been attracting attention since summer 2024 after setting an extraordinary time at the Nürburgring. A prototype completed the legendary Nordschleife in 6:22 minutes, while the subsequent production version recorded a lap of 7:04.957 minutes.

“With this time, the SU7 Ultra was regarded as the fastest production electric saloon at the Nürburgring – quicker than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT or the Rimac Nevera electric hypercar.”

The next step has now followed: on 5 July 2025, the first SU7 Ultra was officially registered in Munich. Its registration number is M SU7088E. The electric car can therefore be driven legally on European roads and will also serve Xiaomi as a rolling test laboratory.

Germany road trip with 260 km/h on the autobahn

Using this first registered vehicle, Xiaomi is currently examining how the extreme saloon performs in day-to-day use. It has already completed an approximately 800-kilometre road trip from Berlin via Hamburg to Frankfurt. On an unrestricted section of autobahn, the SU7 Ultra reached 260 km/h – entirely legally.

This individual registration represents more than a publicity exercise. It indicates that European homologation for the model is substantially in place. In other words, the technical requirements, safety standards and regulations for the European market have largely been met. This is precisely the hurdle at which many young Chinese brands fall short – but Xiaomi now appears to have cleared it.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra performance at supercar level

The SU7 Ultra’s raw figures could have come from a tuning forum, yet they have been officially confirmed: the car produces 1,548 PS across several electric motors. Xiaomi states a 0–100 km/h time of 1.98 seconds, while its theoretical target top speed is as high as 350 km/h.

The battery is supplied by Chinese cell giant CATL and belongs to the Qilin II generation. Under the Chinese CLTC cycle, the 93.7 kWh battery is officially rated for 630 kilometres. Since this test cycle is highly optimistic, industry observers expect a European WLTP figure of comfortably more than 500 kilometres.

‘Civilised’ versions with up to around 700 PS planned

The Ultra will not remain the sole model. Xiaomi is planning a complete SU7 family, with outputs ranging from around 320 to approximately 690 PS, aimed at ‘ordinary’ customers. According to initial information, the most efficient versions could achieve up to 902 kilometres in the Chinese cycle – equivalent to roughly 720 kilometres WLTP, at least on paper.

Xiaomi is therefore clearly targeting cars such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model S, Mercedes EQE and BMW i5. The emphasis is on a premium feel, extensive technology and strong value for money.

European launch: market entry targeted from 2027

Xiaomi intends to officially offer the SU7 range in Europe from 2027, alongside an SUV called the YU7. Its own development and design centre in Munich is already working on adapting the vehicles to European requirements, from chassis tuning to driver-assistance systems and infotainment.

The proposed pricing strategy is particularly interesting. For the ‘standard’ SU7 versions, excluding the Ultra, an entry price of around €35,000 has repeatedly been mentioned internally. If that figure is confirmed, Xiaomi would offer an electric saloon with considerably more technology and range than many current volume models – at the price of a well-equipped compact combustion-engined car.

Pressure on European manufacturers is increasing

The SU7 Ultra and the planned model range will further increase the pressure on European manufacturers. Brands such as BYD, Nio and MG are already gaining attention with aggressive pricing and respectable quality. Xiaomi also brings its strengths in software, electronics and user interfaces.

“The combination of a smartphone ecosystem, a connected car and aggressive pricing could become uncomfortable for established brands in particular.”

Anyone who already uses a Xiaomi phone may be drawn to a seamless connection with their car: shared apps, cloud services and subscription-based functions all fit perfectly with the business model of a technology group.

What Nürburgring records really mean in everyday use

Many readers may ask how relevant a Nordschleife record is to everyday driving. Naturally, a lap time has no bearing on the daily commute. Yet it demonstrates the limits of the engineering: brakes, cooling, chassis and software all have to operate at the highest level when an electric car weighing almost two tonnes is driven continuously at the limit.

When a manufacturer can manage this level of stress, customers benefit as well. The brakes are less likely to overheat on mountain passes, the battery remains stable at high speeds and power is available for longer. This is exactly where Xiaomi is seeking to score points: using records as proof that its technology is robust enough.

There are also familiar questions that remain even more open for high-performance electric cars than for combustion-engined models:

  • How severely does range fall at sustained high speed?
  • How reliably do rapid charges from 10 to 80 per cent work?
  • How long do the battery and drivetrain last when driven sportily?
  • How well does the software perform in driver-assistance and safety systems?

These are precisely the areas Xiaomi is currently testing in real traffic situations with its Munich-registered development vehicle.

Opportunities and risks for buyers in Germany

For prospective German buyers, the SU7 family creates another option in an already expanding electric-car market. Those seeking long-range saloons with considerable power may find what they are looking for here – particularly if prices do indeed sit well below comparable models from European brands.

On the other hand, several questions remain unanswered: how dependable will service and workshop networks be? How quickly can spare parts be sourced? For how long will Xiaomi guarantee software updates? And what will residual values look like after several years when the brand is only just becoming established here?

Anyone considering such a vehicle should look closely before the possible 2027 market launch. Test drives, owner reports from China and the first long-term tests will indicate whether the impressive specification sheets are equally convincing in everyday use. One point is already clear: with the first registration of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra in Germany, the benchmark for electric saloons has moved noticeably higher – for speed, range and, above all, value for money.
