Volkswagen Golf GTI: the most powerful ever will be unveiled at the Nürburgring 24 Hours

Built to mark and celebrate 50 years of the GTI badge, Volkswagen is preparing to unveil the most powerful Golf GTI ever in a world premiere.

Volkswagen Golf GTI: a performance-led anniversary model

While details remain limited, the German manufacturer has confirmed that this will be a flagship commemorative model. It will take a particularly performance-oriented approach, with dynamic changes intended to “cope with” the additional power.

How much extra power will it have? We do not yet know. The German hot hatch currently produces 265 PS, rising to 300 PS in the GTI Clubsport. To earn the title of the most powerful Golf GTI ever, it will need to exceed that figure.

Above the GTI sits the Golf R, which uses the same engine but delivers 333 PS and four-wheel drive. Could Volkswagen produce a 333 PS Golf GTI while retaining two-wheel drive?

Unveiling at the Nürburgring 24 Hours

Volkswagen will reveal its most powerful-ever Golf GTI during the Nürburgring 24 Hours, held from 20 to 22 June.

However, the German car maker will not stop there. Volkswagen will also use the event to showcase the ID. GTI Concept and the Golf R in a new exclusive trim.

Golf GTI Clubsport 24h racers return

In addition, the German brand will enter two Golf GTI Clubsport 24h cars in this iconic race, both prepared by Max Kruse Racing.

Updated for 2025, they feature aerodynamic improvements, revised weight distribution and enhanced durability. They now develop 397 PS (+50 PS compared with before), offsetting the 30 kg increase in the category’s minimum weight. Their top speed is 265 km/h.

The team is aiming to repeat its 2024 victory in the AT3 class, which is reserved for vehicles using alternative fuels. The pair of GTIs will run on Shell E20 bioethanol, comprising 20% ethanol and 80% petrol: a blend with greater resistance to detonation that will help reduce CO₂ emissions.
