It is not an entirely new development: this year marks the 20th anniversary of the partnership between BMW, its M division and MotoGP, which first began in 1999.
With a new season about to get under way, the Motorcycle World Championship organisation has once again selected the German marque’s highest-performance models as the event’s official cars.
BMW M models support MotoGP
This is the 20th season in which BMW M models serve as the official vehicles of the Motorcycle World Championship, with the new BMW M5 (F90) taking centre stage as the Safety Car.
In total, seven BMW M models will provide support and safety at every event.
BMW M5 (F90) as the Safety Car
The new BMW M5 is the first M5 to carry the M Performance badge with the XDrive all-wheel-drive system. To send its 600 hp to all four wheels, the new super saloon dispenses with its predecessor’s dual-clutch gearbox and is fitted exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission known as M Steptronic.
It reaches 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds. Its top speed, naturally without a limiter in this case, will be approximately 305 km/h.
BMW M Award and the Qatar opener
For the 16th time, the BMW M Award for the rider with the best qualifying results will be announced at the end of the championship, with the winner receiving an exclusive BMW M.
The opening round of the MotoGP World Championship takes place in Qatar from 16 to 18 March.
