The Kia EV3 has been named 2025 World Car of the Year at the World Car Awards ceremony, held today at the New York International Auto Show.
The South Korean brand’s compact electric SUV won over the panel of 96 motoring journalists from 30 countries - with Portugal represented by Guilherme Costa - and beat two formidable rivals: the new BMW X3 and Hyundai Inster/Casper Electric.
The accolade gives Kia a second successive win in this prestigious international award and represents its third overall World Car Awards title. The large EV9 claimed the trophy in 2024, while the equally sizeable Telluride won it previously, in 2020.
“It is a tremendous honour for everyone at Kia to see the EV3 receive this award. This global recognition highlights our leadership in sustainable mobility, innovative design and advanced technological solutions.”
- Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia
52 contenders and one winner
The 2025 edition featured 52 eligible models from around the world. The Kia EV3 steadily saw off its competitors until just three finalists remained - two electric vehicles and one combustion-engined model.
To qualify for the World Car of the Year award, models must be built in annual volumes of more than 10,000 units, be priced below the luxury segment in their key markets, and be on sale in at least two major markets - such as China, Europe or the US - across two separate continents, between 1 January 2024 and 30 March 2025.
Voting took place by secret ballot and was audited by KPMG. The jury assessed the models on the basis of its professional experience, including road tests and reviews carried out throughout the year.
Kia EV3 wins on a fitting stage
The announcement was made in New York, a city that has hosted the World Car Awards ceremony for two decades and which this year also marks the 125th anniversary of its International Auto Show - the oldest in the United States.
Organised with Brembo’s support, the World Car Awards recognise six categories, including World Luxury Car, World Performance Car and World Urban Car, among others.
