Toyota Aygo X 2026 becomes the first hybrid city car

Before reaching showrooms, the 2026 Toyota Aygo X made one final stop at the Brussels Motor Show, where it made its public European debut.

Its update extends far beyond styling revisions: the Aygo X becomes the first and only hybrid city car (A-segment) on the market. It is a full hybrid, so it does not need external charging. The previous 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine has been dropped, with the model now using the Yaris hybrid powertrain exclusively.

It therefore pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver 116 hp - a substantial increase over the previous 72 hp - while cutting fuel consumption by one litre per 100 km, from 4.8 l/100 km to just 3.8 l/100 km. Aside from plug-in hybrids, no other combustion-engined car on the market claims fuel economy as low as that of the Aygo X.

The benefits are not limited to fuel consumption. The considerable power increase has also given the Toyota Aygo X much livelier performance, reaching 100 km/h from rest in 9.2 seconds, compared with 14.9 seconds for its predecessor.

What else has changed

Fitting Toyota's hybrid system required a new front end for the 2026 Aygo X, which is longer and has a front overhang increased by 76 mm, while adopting a more sophisticated look. Everything has changed: the bonnet, bumpers and headlights are all new. New 17-inch and 18-inch wheel designs are also available.

Inside, the instrument cluster is now fully digital and the city car offers greater connectivity. Every version comes as standard with a wireless smartphone charger, digital key and electric parking brake. Materials and sound insulation have also been improved, while retaining four seats and a 231-litre boot.

GR Sport is new

The city car range will also introduce a GR Sport variant. Although these letters may evoke high performance and burning rubber, it is little more than a trim level here. The Aygo X GR Sport adopts sportier styling, with a black bonnet and roof, gloss-black and grey interior details, and GR branding.

It is not merely cosmetic. While it receives no extra power, this version gets specific steering and suspension tuning - as well as a thicker anti-roll bar - promising a more engaging and dynamic drive.

When will it arrive?

The 2026 Toyota Aygo X is due to reach the market soon. Although final pricing has yet to be confirmed, it will run into Portugal's outdated tax system: despite promising lower fuel consumption and emissions than the previous 1.0-litre model, its 50% larger engine capacity alone increases the Portuguese vehicle tax (ISV) by around €2,300.

The 1.0-litre Aygo X is available from €18,690, while the least expensive hybrid Yaris starts at €24,330. The price of the new hybrid Aygo X is expected to sit somewhere between the two.
