Toyota GR Yaris 2026 gets a new steering wheel and more grip

The Toyota GR Yaris scarcely needs an introduction, but that is no reason for it to rest on its laurels. Gazoo Racing is not one to stand still, continuing to refine and develop its performance car by listening to feedback from its drivers and customers.

For this year, the GR Yaris receives a further set of upgrades, with the most significant one positioned directly in front of the driver: the steering wheel.

Toyota GR Yaris 2026 steering wheel updates

One criticism of the previous steering wheel concerned the placement of its physical controls, which sat too close to the rim. During more demanding driving, it was relatively easy to press them accidentally. The answer is an entirely new steering wheel.

The controls have been moved closer to the centre, surrounding the airbag module, which has also made it possible to enlarge the hand-grip area. There are also new round, illuminated buttons, making them easier to use at night.

The steering wheel diameter has also been cut by 5 mm, from 365 mm to 360 mm. Gazoo Racing expects this small change to deliver quicker steering inputs and improved control during more committed driving.

More grip and revised steering

The updates extend beyond the steering wheel. The 2026 Toyota GR Yaris now features new Bridgestone Potenza Race tyres, with a revised rubber compound, a new tread pattern and altered internal construction. According to the brand, they provide greater grip at the limit while also lowering road noise.

Revised dampers and electric power steering

To make the most of the additional traction, the Japanese manufacturer has revised the damper settings and recalibrated the electric power steering. The aim is to provide more consistent responses through corners with higher lateral loads and under heavy braking.

When does it reach the market?

Toyota says these upgrades can already be ordered on GR Yaris models sold in Europe, although there is currently no information on any price changes for Portugal. The GR Yaris currently starts from €59,950.
