Google Maps update: Immersive Navigation and Ask Maps with Gemini

Google Maps is about to become far more than a tool for calculating routes and displaying traffic jams. Over the coming months, Google will roll out its biggest upgrade in more than a decade: navigation is moving into three dimensions, voice guidance is becoming markedly more intelligent, and a Gemini-powered AI will answer complex questions about places, routes and activities. The features will launch in the US first, before reaching the rest of the world gradually.

How Google Maps is changing

Google has grouped the updates into two major features: “Immersive Navigation” and “Ask Maps”. Both rely on the Gemini models that the company has been integrating into its products for some time.

  • Immersive Navigation: an entirely new three-dimensional view of a journey, with realistically modelled surroundings.
  • Ask Maps: a conversational assistant within the app that responds to open-ended questions, rather than simply “How do I get from A to B?”.

Google aims to ease two long-standing problems for drivers: cluttered map displays and overly rigid, unhelpful directions that create stress rather than reducing it.

Especially in city traffic, heavy congestion or unfamiliar areas, drivers should be able to grasp what lies ahead more quickly, without anxiously shifting their attention between the road and the screen every few seconds.

Immersive Navigation brings Google Maps into 3D

With Immersive Navigation, Google Maps moves away to some extent from the flat, abstract map. Instead, the app recreates the surrounding area as a 3D scene using Street View imagery and aerial photography. Gemini examines this information to build a form of spatial understanding of the route.

The display will show:

  • buildings, bridges and changes in elevation as 3D models;
  • lanes, turning lanes and merge points;
  • pedestrian crossings and junctions;
  • traffic lights and stop signs in their real-world locations.

The feature becomes particularly useful during difficult manoeuvres. At large junctions or confusing exits, the map automatically zooms in. At the same time, Maps can make buildings partly transparent, keeping the road, exit routes and lane changes clearly visible.

The app aims to display what people genuinely need to know: Where do I need to go, which lane should I be in, and what is around the next bend?

This “smart zoom” is designed to reduce familiar moments of stress: exits appearing unexpectedly, unclear lane layouts, or tight city-centre junctions where drivers could previously take the wrong turn with ease.

New voice guidance: less robotic, more everyday language

Alongside the visual overhaul, Google is revising its voice guidance. Directions are intended to sound more natural and provide additional context. Rather than using the familiar instruction “Turn right in 300 metres”, the app could say:

“Pass the next exit and take the one after it.”

It may sound like a minor change, but every millisecond of understanding matters while driving. Many motorists rely more readily on landmarks, such as “turn left after the petrol station”, than on distances in metres. Google is now moving in that direction, aided by the route’s improved spatial modelling.

Google also says the system processes more than five million traffic updates every second. More than ten million reports are submitted by users each day, including reports of accidents, roadworks and flooding. This information feeds into route planning in real time and affects how and when the app warns users about hazards or delays.

Route choices explained: time, cost and stress level

Maps already offers alternative routes, but it is often unclear which option is genuinely worthwhile. With the major update, the app will make the trade-offs more obvious:

  • Route A: quicker, but involving tolls or a high risk of congestion.
  • Route B: slightly longer, but generally smoother and less stressful.
  • Route C: shorter and free, but with many traffic lights and narrow city-centre streets.

Some of this information was already available, but it was hidden and fragmented. Going forward, users should be able to see immediately what they are choosing: time savings, cost, stress, or a balance of all three.

Ask Maps: an AI assistant for difficult questions about places

The second major feature is called Ask Maps. Gemini enters the app as a conversational partner. The premise is that, instead of entering fixed search terms, users can interact with Google Maps as they would with another person.

Examples of requests the assistant is expected to understand include:

  • “Show me child-friendly restaurants with outdoor terraces in Munich that are open on Sunday evening.”
  • “Plan me a route through Berlin with three sunset photography spots and charging stations nearby.”
  • “Which areas of Hamburg should I avoid if heavy rain is forecast this evening?”

Ask Maps combines place data, reviews, opening hours, live traffic, weather information and user experiences, then turns them into a specific, easy-to-understand response.

Anyone who already uses voice search, whether in a car through Android Auto or using a phone mounted on the dashboard, will be able to make much more flexible requests. The app suggests suitable places, routes and time slots, while continuously adjusting its recommendations when circumstances change.

Gemini behind the scenes

Gemini is Google’s current AI platform and can process several types of data at once: text, images, video and location information. Within Maps, this is particularly relevant to two tasks:

  • Spatial analysis: road layouts, traffic management, building shapes and obstacles are reconstructed from different image sources.
  • Language understanding: users’ open-ended requests are interpreted, supplemented and translated into specific map actions.

This means Maps can indicate not only where something is, but also what it may be like to drive there or arrive there. Examples include narrow old-town lanes, multi-lane motorway interchanges, or gradients that matter to e-bikes or older vehicles.

What the Google Maps update means for everyday drivers

For people who commute daily or regularly drive in unfamiliar cities, three aspects are likely to be especially relevant:

  • Less need to look at the screen: clearer visuals and improved voice directions reduce the time drivers’ eyes are away from the road.
  • Fewer wrong turns: transparent buildings, lane markings and intelligent zooming make tricky exits and turns easier to manage.
  • Greater flexibility while travelling: the AI assistant can suggest alternatives at short notice, for example when car parks are full or the weather changes.

In combination with Android Auto and CarPlay, Maps could therefore become even more central as the main interface in the car. People driving older vehicles with a smartphone mount should also gain visual benefits, although it remains to be seen how well the new 3D view works on smaller displays.

Potential risks and unanswered questions

More AI in the car also raises familiar concerns. The more precisely Google analyses traffic, locations and movement patterns, the more sensitive the data it gathers becomes. Users should take a careful look at the app’s location settings and permissions.

There is another consideration: the 3D graphics and continuous background analysis could require more processing power and battery capacity. This may be noticeable on older smartphones or during long journeys without a power supply. Google is likely to optimise much of this, but the added convenience is not technically without cost.

Finally, there is the question of how heavily users should rely on AI recommendations. An assistant suggesting “suitable” neighbourhoods, routes or places is always making a selection. Anyone who wants to get to know new cities properly should still retain some curiosity and avoid following only the paths it recommends.

The practical direction nevertheless appears clear: navigation is evolving from a static guide into an ongoing conversational companion that assesses situations, preferences and conditions in real time. With this new update, Google Maps is taking a major step in that direction, changing how many people will find their way around cities, on holiday or during their everyday commute.
