BYD Atto 2 expands into plug-in hybrid territory

The BYD Atto 2 arrived at the end of 2024 as the Chinese brand’s most affordable electric SUV in Europe, and Portugal was no exception, with prices starting from €29,305.

However, the B-SUV will no longer be offered solely as a fully electric model. It will also gain a plug-in hybrid version, using the same DM-i (Dual Mode-intelligent) technology already found in other BYD models.

This move aligns with BYD’s strategy of broadening its European powertrain range in response to fluctuating demand for fully electric vehicles.

Up to 90 km of electric range

BYD has not yet disclosed every detail, but it has confirmed that the new Atto 2 DM-i will be able to travel up to 90 km in fully electric mode. Once the battery charge is depleted, a combustion engine will take over, enabling a total range of 1000 km. This figure will make it a benchmark within its segment.

Technical information about the combustion engine has not yet been announced. It could be the same unit used in the BYD Seal U DM-i and Seal 6 DM-i: a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine producing 98 hp and 122 Nm of torque.

Like the electric Atto 2, the plug-in hybrid model will be offered in two trim levels, with various battery capacities, driving ranges and power outputs.

BYD Atto 2 DM-i design changes

The new powertrain is not the only change. Visually, the Atto 2 DM-i features a revised front end with a larger grille, along with model-specific badges. The Midnight Blue colour shown in the images will also be exclusive to this plug-in hybrid variant.

When does it arrive?

The BYD Atto 2 DM-i will make its first public appearance this week at Fleet Europe Days, an event held in Luxembourg. Its press presentation, which we will attend, is scheduled for November.

According to the manufacturer, pre-sales will begin shortly afterwards, while the first deliveries are expected during the first quarter of 2026.
