European Electric Vehicle Sales: Volkswagen Leads August Market

The European electric vehicle market continues to expand significantly. Final figures for August are now available: 159,810 units were sold, 26.8% more than in the same month of 2024.

Over the year to date, the total has reached 1,536,433 units, representing growth of 26%, according to ACEA (the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) data.

Volkswagen retains the lead

As expected, Volkswagen remains in first place, selling 16,105 units in August, up 45% on the same month in 2024. Tesla takes second place. Having been absent from the podium for several months, it has returned to the top three with 14,245 registrations, despite a 23% decline compared with August 2024 (source: DataForce).

The American manufacturer was the only brand in the Top 10 to post a fall in sales.

BMW completes the podium, with 12,546 units registered and more modest growth of 7%. However, as the table shows, the most notable shifts in European electric vehicle sales are found elsewhere in this Top 10:

Strong growth among the remaining Top 10 brands

Skoda is growing rapidly, both in electric vehicles and conventional powertrains. In August, it came close to overtaking BMW after growing by 82% (11,223 units). Hyundai and Renault reported similarly strong increases of 85% (8,229 units) and 86% (7,501 units), respectively.

Audi also recorded particularly substantial growth of 54%, with 9,564 units sold. Outside the podium positions, only Mercedes-Benz posted more restrained growth, at 7% (8,207 units).
