Volvo unveils the world’s first multi-adaptive seat belt

The story is repeating itself. After Volvo transformed car safety in 1959 with the invention of the three-point seat belt, the manufacturer is innovating once more by unveiling the world’s first multi-adaptive seat belt.

As its name suggests, the new system can adjust in real time to each occupant’s physical characteristics - including height, weight, body shape and even their seating position - as well as the particular circumstances of a collision.

According to Volvo, a heavier passenger involved in a serious crash will benefit from a higher restraining force, which can, for example, reduce the risk of head injuries. A lighter person in a low-impact collision, meanwhile, will be protected with less force, potentially helping to prevent rib fractures.

11 load-limiting profiles

This is possible because the system moves beyond the previous three pre-set load-limiting profiles to offer 11, “exponentially increasing the precision of protection”. These profiles are selected within fractions of a second, based on data gathered and interpreted from several vehicle systems, allowing the belt to respond virtually at the moment of impact.

How does the Volvo multi-adaptive seat belt work?

To deliver this tailored protection, the new multi-adaptive seat belt uses advanced sensors both inside and outside the vehicle. It also works alongside other safety systems, including airbags, occupant-detection sensors and driver-assistance systems.

The system is also expected to improve occupant protection over time through over-the-air software updates.

These updates will be supported by the ongoing collection of data from real-world accidents, enabling the system to become increasingly intelligent, refine its response strategies and raise protection levels.

The technology has been developed using a real-world database that already contains more than 80,000 people involved in accidents. This has provided Volvo with the data needed to anticipate and simulate scenarios that go beyond legal requirements.

Debut in 2026

The multi-adaptive seat belt will make its debut in the new Volvo EX60, a fully electric SUV set to arrive on the market in 2026.

Volvo to share the safety technology

As was the case with the three-point seat belt, this new technology will also be made freely available to other manufacturers, with Volvo giving up exclusive patent rights.

The three-point seat belt is estimated to have saved more than one million lives already, and Volvo expects this new multi-adaptive seat belt to save many more.
