Renault: technology for everyone, not just luxury cars

The best automotive technology should not be a privilege confined to luxury cars. Traditionally, innovations made their debut in top-of-the-range vehicles before reaching higher-volume models years later. Throughout more than 125 years of history, Renault has worked to overturn that pattern: making what was once exceptional accessible.

Driven by that ambition, the French brand has introduced solutions in its mainstream models that have improved safety, comfort and efficiency. Examples include the first five-door car (Renault 16), the first people carrier (Espace), and the first car to achieve 5 Euro NCAP stars (Laguna).

Renault was also among the trailblazers in introducing technology such as the navigation system (Safrane), the hands-free access card (Laguna), and equipment now often taken for granted: electric windows (Renault 16) and the onboard computer (Renault 30). More recently, this century saw the arrival of a new-generation, high-volume electric car: the Zoe.

That approach of democratising what was once exceptional still guides the brand today. Here are five further tangible examples already available across several Renault models.

1. Safety without compromise

Safety has long been one of Renault’s key priorities: it was the first manufacturer to secure five stars in Euro NCAP testing. Today, it still aims to exceed the basic requirements. Fireman Access illustrates this well: it is a direct access point to the high-voltage battery that enables firefighters to respond within minutes following an accident involving one of the brand’s electric vehicles.

Renault’s system gives firefighters direct battery access, allowing them to cut the electrical current immediately and shorten response times: less time, less risk and a greater chance of survival.

Renault views the system as so important that it has opened the patent to competitors, making the technology available to the entire industry.

Safety goes further still. At the same time, the range of driver-assistance systems continues to grow, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and intelligent speed control.

2. A giant inside a Renault

Safety is not solely about the vehicle structure; it also relies on information. That is why every Renault model uses multimedia systems developed in partnership with technology giant Google. Regarded as one of the market’s best infotainment systems, it supports more than 70 voice commands and allows users to install over 100 apps through the Google Store.

Its integration is comprehensive yet intuitive: fewer interactions with the screen mean more time looking at the road. It is technology designed to make driving simpler, rather than the other way round.

3. Silence as a right for everyone

The quiet operation of electric cars is one of the benefits most often associated with the technology, but it also presents a challenge. Once the sound of a combustion engine disappears, every other noise becomes more noticeable. Renault therefore developed the Cocoon Effect, using insulating foam placed between the battery and the passenger compartment.

The principle is straightforward: to create a kind of acoustic cocoon for those inside. The result is quieter, more comfortable journeys, without the extra weight associated with traditional insulation materials, improving ride comfort in the cabin.

In practical terms, there are fewer vibrations, less noise and greater comfort, without adding weight to the car. Silence is no longer a luxury; it is a right.

4. A place in the sun called Solarbay

The Solarbay panoramic roof is another Renault innovation. With a single touch or voice command, occupants can alter the glass transparency. Unlike conventional glass roofs, it lets users select the degree of transparency, including by individual sections.

Beyond its visual appeal, Solarbay also supports thermal comfort by helping to keep the cabin temperature stable. This advanced technology, once reserved for models priced in the hundreds of thousands of euros, is now offered on the Scenic E-Tech and Rafale.

5. Saving for what matters most

Technology democratisation also takes place beneath the bonnet. Renault has been expanding its electrified range with the new 1.8-litre, 160 hp Full Hybrid E-Tech system. More powerful and more efficient, this powertrain requires no external charging and cuts fuel consumption and emissions without demanding new driving habits.

Alongside the efficient petrol engine, it uses an intelligent multi-mode gearbox to deliver the intended result: unique on the market, clutchless, with four ratios for the combustion engine and two for the electric traction motor - 15 gears in total. Inspired by Formula 1 technology, this gearbox has generated more than 100 patents.

However, if electric or hybrid technology is not yet within everyone’s reach, Renault offers an alternative and has taken another step forward with bi-fuel cars: ECO-G technology, combining direct LPG injection with 48 V mild hybrid electrification.

The new 1.2-litre, 120 hp engine delivers more power and savings of up to 40% compared with an equivalent petrol engine, alongside lower emissions and a range of more than 1000 km. It remains one of the solutions that makes the most sense for many drivers in Portugal.

According to the French brand, this is one of its core principles: showing that technology can be for everyone, rather than a luxury reserved for a few. It also helps to lower running costs. From safety to efficiency, one principle runs through every one of these innovations: technology should serve people, not the other way round.
