New Peugeot 408 arrives in Portugal from 37 065 euros

Peugeot has begun 2026 on a positive note, unveiling the updated 408 at the Brussels Motor Show. The model is already on sale in Portugal, with prices starting at 37 065 euros.

First introduced in 2023, the French crossover gains the same styling and technology updates seen on its 308 ‘sibling’, as well as a plug-in hybrid option exclusive to the French brand’s range.

Peugeot 408 exterior and interior updates

At the front, the lighting units are now split, separating the main headlamps from the light signature. On higher-specification versions, the latter’s “three claws” are linked by smaller sections. At the rear, while the 308 retains the brand emblem, the 408 replaces it with an illuminated “Peugeot” wordmark across every version.

Inside, the refreshed Peugeot 408 still centres on the i-Cockpit, comprising two 10-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Beneath the infotainment screen is the i-Toggle: a compact display on which drivers can pin shortcut controls for the functions they use most often while driving.

Powertrains for almost every preference

Under the bonnet, the new Peugeot 408 remains available with the same petrol, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

The main highlight is the second of these. Its total combined output has risen by 15 hp, from 225 hp to 240 hp, while its all-electric range has also increased. With a larger battery providing 14.2 kWh of usable capacity, the 408 Plug-in Hybrid now claims up to 85 km (WLTP) between charges. At 7.4 kW, recharging it takes around 2h05min.

Otherwise, there is little to report. Entry to the range is still through the 408 Hybrid 145 hp, which combines the familiar 1.2 Turbo petrol engine with a small 21 kW (29 hp) electric motor powered by a 48 V mild-hybrid system. Although systems of this kind do not usually allow fully electric driving, the 408 is an exception.

At steady speeds, and whenever the battery has sufficient charge, the French crossover can travel in “zero-emissions” mode, with a claimed average consumption of just 5 l/100 km.

E-408 electric range and charging

At the top of the line-up sits the E-408, powered by a 213 hp (157 kW) electric motor and a 58.2 kWh battery. In practical terms, this delivers up to 456 km of range on the combined WLTP cycle.

The E-408 supports DC rapid charging at up to 120 kW, allowing the battery to be replenished from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes.

The updated Peugeot 408 is offered exclusively in two trim levels: Allure and GT. In Allure specification, the French crossover includes keyless entry and start, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, full LED headlamps, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and 17-inch alloy wheels - or 19-inch wheels on the plug-in hybrid - among other features.
