Peugeot 408 to receive updates for 2026

Three years have passed since the Peugeot 408 was launched. Some people regard it as an SUV and others as a saloon, but it is really a blend of both: a crossover saloon or, if you prefer, a Peugeot 308 with “trousers rolled up”.

Whatever label is applied, the French model is beginning to show its age. To ensure it remains aligned with the brand’s other offerings, it is set to be refreshed for 2026, strengthening the attributes that have helped it achieve a solid sales pace.

Although no official details have yet been released, it is not difficult to predict that the updated 408 will adopt the same changes introduced on the new Peugeot 308, revealed just over a month ago.

The camouflage on the prototypes we “caught” supports that theory. The Peugeot 408 will gain a new front end and, like its “brother”, this should chiefly involve split headlights and a fresh lighting signature defined by three LED “claws”.

These three “claws” will sit at the top of the front section and are also expected to be joined by illuminated strips extending across the model’s width, covering virtually the entire breadth of the bodywork. The brand badge at the centre of the grille should be illuminated too.

Updated Peugeot 408 i-Cockpit technology

Inside, the new Peugeot 408 is expected to follow the brand’s technological evolution. The i-Cockpit will remain the focal point, now featuring new elements ranging from customisable ambient lighting to a redesigned instrument panel.

The biggest addition, however, could be the i-Connect Advanced infotainment system, including TomTom navigation and ChatGPT integration.

What is under the bonnet?

In terms of powertrains, the 408 is likely to retain one of the segment’s broadest ranges, with petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric options.

The petrol choice should be restricted to the 1.2 Turbo engine, now paired with a 48 V mild-hybrid system, producing 145 hp and 230 Nm. Meanwhile, the diesel version is expected to remain with the 1.5 BlueHDi engine delivering 130 hp.

For those prioritising electric range, the plug-in hybrid system or the fully electric version should be the preferred choice. The former is expected to offer maximum combined output of around 195 hp and a maximum electric range close to 84 km (WLTP), thanks to a 17.2 kWh battery.

The latter, meanwhile, should use a 157 kW (213 hp) electric motor supplied by a 58.2 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 452 km (WLTP).

When will it arrive?

Peugeot has not yet officially commented on the arrival of the updated Peugeot 408, but all indications suggest it will be unveiled later this year before reaching the market next year.
