Portugal’s car market has just welcomed Omoda, a Chinese brand owned by automotive giant Chery Automobile. Following a successful launch in Spain, where it has sold more than 20 thousand vehicles, Omoda enters the Portuguese market through Grupo JAP.

The brand is making its debut with two SUVs: the fully electric Omoda 5, priced from 34 900 euros, and the range-topping Omoda 9, which starts at 49 900 euros and uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Omoda 5

In Portugal, the Omoda 5 will be offered in Comfort and Premium trims. Although the latter costs more, it also comes with the more extensive standard equipment list, including 360º cameras, electrically adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic roof, among other features.

Stylistically, the Chinese SUV adopts a sporty design inspired by the “Art in Motion” concept, with a T-shaped light signature and Full LED headlights. Inside, the standout feature is a pair of 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

It also includes 16 driver-assistance systems, such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert.

Under the bonnet, the Omoda 5 is powered by a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor producing 340 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. It is supplied by a 61.06 kWh battery, delivering a range of up to 430 km on the WLTP cycle.

When it is time to recharge, the Chinese SUV supports 11 kW alternating-current (AC) charging and 80 kW direct-current (DC) charging. This means charging the battery from 30% to 80% takes between three and four hours, or 28 minutes respectively.

Omoda 9

The Omoda 9, meanwhile, is the flagship of the Chinese brand and is available in just one equipment level. According to Omoda, it is positioned as the “ultimate example of the best value for money philosophy”.

This plug-in hybrid SUV features four motors that develop a combined 395 kW (537 hp), allowing it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

In fully electric mode, its sizeable 34.46 kWh battery provides up to 145 km between charges, while the combined range with the combustion engine reaches 1100 km.

Like other European brands, this plug-in hybrid also supports rapid charging at up to 65 kW. In other words, the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in around 25 minutes. With slower alternating-current (AC) charging, charging power is limited to 6.6 kW.

On the technology front, the Omoda 9 has two 12.3-inch screens, a 50-inch head-up display, and electrically adjustable seats that are heated, ventilated and equipped with a massage function.

In terms of safety, it is fitted with 19 driver-assistance systems, notably a 540º panoramic camera, electronic brakeforce distribution, an anti-rollover stability system, adaptive cruise control, among others.

When do they arrive?

The new Omoda 5 and Omoda 9 are now available to order in Portugal, with a vehicle warranty of up to seven years or 150 thousand kilometres, and battery cover of up to eight years or 160 thousand kilometres. Discover all prices:
