Subaru Uncharted: the new electric crossover for North America

Subaru has a new electric crossover aimed at the North American market. Called the Uncharted, it sits below the Solterra in the range.

Yet, like the Solterra, the Uncharted has very little Subaru about it and a great deal of Toyota. It is, in effect, the sibling model to the Toyota C-HR+, which has already been unveiled in Europe.

The similarities are extensive, although Subaru’s designers have given the Uncharted a different “face”, redesigned bumpers and a slightly altered integration of the rear lights. Beyond that, almost nothing has changed, including inside the cabin.

It uses the same e-TNGA platform and 77 kWh battery, and is offered in front-wheel-drive form with one 224 hp motor, or all-wheel drive with two motors producing 343 hp. Interestingly, the C-HR+ is available only with all-wheel drive in the US, while this is Subaru’s first front-wheel-drive model in that market for several years.

Range and performance

Subaru claims a range of up to 492 km under the North American test cycle. That is considerably lower than the 605 km WLTP range quoted in Europe for the Toyota C-HR+ with the same battery.

Perhaps more significant for the brand’s enthusiasts is that the Subaru Uncharted reaches 60 mph (96 km/h) from rest faster than the WRX STI: 5.0 seconds versus 5.6 seconds.
