The Mercedes-AMG GT was conceived to rival icons such as the Porsche 911, but its more affordable versions will now take on that challenge with a “modest” four-cylinder engine of just 2.0 litres.
It is worth remembering that the second-generation AMG GT, unveiled last year, reached the local market solely in its most powerful guise, fitted with the formidable 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 585 hp.
Simpler and more accessible Mercedes-AMG GT 43
The new Mercedes-AMG GT 43 now trades that entire “firepower” for half the cylinder count and two fewer driven wheels - just as happened with the SL 43.
Although it has half the cylinders and engine capacity of the most potent version, it does not deliver half the output. The 2.0-litre Turbo engine in the new Mercedes-AMG GT 43 develops a maximum 422 hp and 500 Nm of torque.
To achieve these figures, Mercedes-AMG has employed an electrically assisted turbocharger, together with a 48 V mild-hybrid, or MHEV, system. The latter can provide an additional 14 hp for short periods, supporting the internal-combustion engine.
Performance remains fitting for a Mercedes-AMG GT: it reaches 100 km/h from rest in just 4.6 seconds and has a 280 km/h top speed.
Driving enjoyment remains the focus
Despite being the simpler and more affordable model, it is still an AMG GT, so driving enjoyment remains a priority.
To ensure this, the brand has retained the nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT 9G automatic gearbox, although not the 4Matic+ system. In other words, this new AMG GT has “only” rear-wheel drive. Even so, it features an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.
Having “half an engine” and two fewer driven wheels makes the GT 43 195 kg lighter than the GT 63, with a quoted kerb weight of 1775 kg under the European standard.
Both the front and rear suspension have model-specific tuning and forged aluminium components. A capable braking system is also fitted, with ventilated and drilled discs. At higher speeds, the new AMG GT 43 also benefits from several active-aerodynamics solutions.
Some of the equipment offered on the more powerful AMG GT can also be specified for this version, including rear-wheel steering and the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which adds a “Race” driving mode.
A distinctive exterior treatment
Mercedes-AMG has done more than “simply” remove the V8 and install a four-cylinder engine in its place. There are numerous styling differences between the GT 43 and its more powerful GT 63 sibling.
It receives redesigned bumpers and less pronounced wheel arches, reflecting its narrower track widths. At the rear, there are still four exhaust outlets, with two on each side of the bumper, but they are now round rather than trapezoidal, as on the AMG GT 63.
Along the side, the model designation is more discreet - as is the air outlet - while 19-inch alloy wheels are standard. However, 20-inch and even 21-inch options can be chosen.
For a more individual appearance, three exterior equipment packages are available, ranging from a more classic look to a sportier one.
When will the Mercedes-AMG GT 43 arrive?
The local launch date and price of the Mercedes-AMG GT 43 have yet to be confirmed, so it will be necessary to wait a few more days.
